‘The Gilpin Hotel and Spa’, Cumbria

This commission for the hotels new spa was to produce wall art panels for the sauna.

Three unique, kiln-formed glass panels were made in a range of greens to reflect natural moss and foliage, a theme of the spa area. The temperature in the kiln was taken a little higher to achieve more variations in the colour saturation.

The vibrant glass was cast onto a textured mould and heavily textured to the surface. They were silver leafed on the back to enhance the colours and cast texture and then bonded to the stone tiles on the wall.

‘Private Swimming Pool’, Cumbria

Design and manufacture of a series of 12 large windows for a private swimming pool. I split each of the 4 openings into 3 windows of varying sizes.

The glass was cast in the kiln, creating deep colours and heavy textures to the back of the glass and to the surface.

Each of the 12 windows were triple glazed. This means my bespoke kiln-formed glass was glazed in-between 2 toughened leaves of clear glass. Therefore making the windows toughened and enabling the glass to keep the heat in.

‘Internally Lit Window’, Cumbria

This client commissioned me to produce a bespoke glass panel to illuminate and enhance an empty recessed wall space in his home office.

The client spent a lot of time working from his desk which looked out onto this redundant, blank wall.

I used the amazing gardens which surrounded the house as inspiration, the large colourful rhodedendrums, abundant ferns and stream are featured.

The kiln formed glass panel measures 2 metres high x 800mm wide. The glass is heavily textured on the back and surface.

A bespoke, dimmable LED panel was created to sit behind the glass to illuminate it.

‘Artists House’, Cumbria

A bespoke kiln-formed glass internal window for the porch area of a Victorian house. The design was a response to the artists sketches.

Hand cut coloured glass was placed onto a base sheet of glass. Gaps were intentionally left in-between the coloured pieces and powdered colour pushed into them to achieve this mosaic effect.

The glass was cast onto a mould in the kiln to give a soft texture to the glass.

The glass is a striking feature to the hallway and catches your attention when walking down the stairs.

‘Front Door Glass’, Cumbria

I used the surrounding fells of Keswick as inspiration for this front door glass. Skiddaw and Blencathra are viewed from nearby.

The three panels of glass were made in the kiln using a palette of colours reflecting the Lake District and the interior scheme. The glass is cast onto a soft textured mould to achieve a subtle effect. They panels were double glazed.

‘Chapel Gallery’, Ormskirk

This was a large architectural glass commission for the front facade of a redeveloped chapel. I was commissioned to work with the local community to develop designs for the windows.

I worked with various groups of secondary school pupils to develop design ideas through obsevational drawing, developmental drawing, collage, laminating and cyanotype printmaking. These mirrored the techniques used in the final windows.

I used an encapsulation technique where I incorporated hand painted fabrics, card, metals and threads, laminated into toughened sheets of glass. The motifs used in the design came from the pupils exploration of the existing spaces in the chapel and existing stained glass which was being removed.

The large windows were double glazed. As well as being a feature to the building, seen from the road, internally the windows can be viewed close up from the stairwell.

‘Internal window’, Cumbria

The location for this glass was in an existing frame between the hallway and lounge area and therefore viewed from both sides at eye level.

Taking inspiration from the surrounding landscape of Windermere, the fells and its lake. The colours are a combination of strong hues and softer powders.

The bespoke, kiln-formed glass is designed to be touched, it is tactile with its inherent and surface texture, which allows light to bounce off and pass through.

You can see the view of the back of the glass is equally effective.

‘En-suite doors’, Cumbria

I love casting textures into softly coloured glass. There is a wonderful play of light which bounces around the glass and changes with the natural or artificial lighting.

This project was a great example of this. The texture is soft and flowing, offering a screen between the bedroom and en-suite. The glass works in harmony with the interior spaces, soft textured sweeping lines and bubbles.

The textures were achieved by casting the large sheet glass onto a one-off mould in the kiln. It was fired to around 740 degrees. Once cleaned up, the glass was then taken to Merseyside to be toughened.

‘En-suite windows’, Cumbria

These wonderful clients were extending their home to accommodate a downstairs bedroom and en-suite. They have the most amazing collection of Japanese Art and books. The house is brimming with amazing artwork.

This set the inspiration for the glass. The brief was to create 2 sets of windows with Japanese inspiration. The windows looked onto the front driveway of the house and so privacy was important too.

Hand painted silks and hand cut card threads and metals are encapsulated into toughened glass sheets to create a really unique set of architectural glass windows. Double glazed.

‘Front Door’ Cumbria

A kiln-formed glass shaped window for a front door. Heavy texture cast into the glass and to the surface. The design is taken from my personal work of fissures and strata in rock formations.

The glass is kiln-formed onto a mould to achieve the bubble effect. The vertical surface texture is allied to the surface. Once cleaned up the glass is made into a double glazed unit using a sheet of satin glass as the internal leaf for privacy.

‘Private Client’, Bristol

Something a little different. This brief was very specific to create geometric paterned glass for a set of internal doors.

To achieve this precise geometric grid, the coloured, hand cut glass squares were laid onto a base sheet of glass, over a drawing to ensure the grid was tight.

The colours were placed randomly and then kiln formed onto a very soft texture.

‘Private Client’, Grasmere

Commissioned glass borrowed light panel for a a stairwell. A bright and vibrant feature to a neutral staircase in a Lakeland home.

The design for this project came from the clients sketch doodles. They wanted a tactile effect, visible layers of cast texture and coloured layers. I used a combination of solid and powderd colour.

This glass was in what is referred to, as a critical location, (kick height on a staircase). Therefore in order to meet building regulations, the glass should be toughened or over 15mm thick.

As my glass could not be toughened, I made it 18mm thick to meet this regulations. The glass had to go through two very long firings to achieve the effects required and due to its overall size and thickness.

‘Front Door’ Cumbria

Three long pieces of kiln-formed glass make up this front door glazing. The design was inspired by local views over the estuary in Silverdale.

The textures cast into the glass evoke the patterns in the shifting sands, which catch the natural light wonderfully. Soft colours are overlaid to give a sense of sand, water and hills.

‘House Sign’, Cornwall

‘Bosrun’, meaning ‘ Home on the Hill’. A small commission for a house but looks great against that Cornish stone facade!
