Frequently Asked Questions - Splash Backs

Can the splash backs go behind a hob?

Yes they can ! I have been making splash backs to go behind hobs for around 17 years. My glass is happy warming up and cooling gently - it doesn’t like being heat shocked! So, you will need an upstand behind the cooker for the glass to sit on. This is usually in the same material as the worktop. I recommend this is at a height of 100mm. The hob should be a minimum of 50mm from this upstand.

What about an Aga or range cooker?

Yes they can ! I have installed glass splash backs above many Agas and range cookers. Ideally there is an upstand behind the cooker which the glass can sit on, however lots of these cookers sit independently and just have the metal upstand attached to the cooker. There are options if this is the case. Larger glass pieces can span beyond the width of the cooker and rest on the worktop at each side. Another option is to place a baton on the wall below the line of the metal upstand for the glass to sit on. Usually there is a solution.

Is the glass toughened?

As the glass sits against a wall, it does not require being toughened. My coloured glass splash backs cannot be toughened. However, the single colour textured glass splash backs can be toughened as well as the laminated glass. This is recommended if the glass is not able to sit on an upstand.

What is the maximum size ?

I am able to make a single piece of glass up to 2000mm x 995mm.  Larger pieces can be made in sections and cut to enable the join to look neat, The laminated glass options can be larger.

How thick are the splash backs?

The single colour textured glass is 6mm thick, the coloured glass is approx 7mm thick and the laminated glass is approx 9mm thick

Can I have socket cut outs in the glass?

Yes you can. I will advise you on this at the initial meeting depending on which glass type is ordered.

How is the glass fixed to the wall?

The glass sits flat to the wall and is held in place with clear silicone. Full instructions are provided if you are fitting yourself.

How do I clean the glass ?

The glass will have a smooth surface which makes it great for keeping clean as there is no grout and all the cast texture is on the back of the glass ! Use a soft cloth and warm water with washing up liquid or a glass cleaning product. Remember - glass will scratch if an abrasive cleaner is used and no boiling water as it wont be happy!

Can I send you measurements myself?

You can send me measurements for your glass. I recommend you send me the tight size (maximum) then I can deduct mm for fitting. Measurements are outlined in the agreement form and I won’t accept liability if this is wrong.

Other Frequently Asked Questions

Is this bespoke glass suitable for windows and doors?

Yes I have been commissioned to make many windows in different styles! (Please visit the Architectural Glass section in the header ‘Projects’)

The single colour, textured glass can be toughened and manufactured into double glazed units making it perfect for windows and doors. The laminated glass option is toughened and can also be manufactured to double glazed units.

As the coloured glass cannot be toughened, this style of glass can be used in none critical areas (above 800mm high). It can be double and triple glazed depending on its application. In critical areas (below 800mm high) the glass can be made to the required thickness of 15mm or above. (Please discuss this further with me)

Can I fit the glass myself?

I would always recommend getting a professional to fit the glass, however if you are confident and competent then I will provide details on fitting depending on the location. If it is a piece of lighting then a qualified electrician must always install.

Can I have the glass delivered ?

Smaller items can be couriered to you on a next day delivery service. However larger items such as splash backs and windows will need to be sent with a specific art courier. This service is charged at cost and usually takes one week. If you are in Cumbria then I can deliver personally. Please contact me to discuss this option if you are elsewhere in the country.

What is the thickest glass you can produce?

Toughened glass maximum thickness is 12mm. Coloured glass is generally 7mm thick but can be cast up to 18mm thick.

Can I see my commission being made?

It is possible to arrange to visit the studio during the commissioning process by arrangement. I can keep you updated through photographs by email.

Can I make my own glass?

At the moment I don’t offer courses in making glass, however you are welcome to sign up to my newsletter and I will notify you if this changes (I have had lots of enquiries so you never know!)

What is the lead time?

With every project being different it is impossible to give a general lead time. I can give you an approx timescale at the initial meeting when the project is outlined.
